Snowlandia: The World's Largest Ice Maze Guide

I f you are visiting Zakopane in the winter, there is one place that looks like it came straight out of a Disney movie. **Snowlandia**, located right next to the "Wielka Krokiew" ski jump, is home to a massive labyrinth built entirely from snow and ice.

1. The Snow Labyrinth

Erected every year as soon as the temperature drops, this is the largest snow maze in the world. It covers over 2,500 square meters and has walls that are 2 meters high.

  • The Experience: It takes about 20-30 minutes to find your way out. It is a fantastic activity for children and a great place for family photos.
  • Safety: The paths are wide and safe, but they can be slippery. Wear good winter boots!

2. The Igloo & Ice Carvings

Next to the maze is a massive igloo filled with stunning ice sculptures. Every year has a different theme, from mountain legends to famous movie characters. The detail in the carvings, illuminated by colorful LED lights, is breathtaking.

3. Sledding & Tobogganing

Snowlandia also features a dedicated, safe hill for sledding. You can rent "saneczki" (sleds) on-site. It's much safer than sledding on random mountain slopes and is specifically designed for tourists.

Visitor Tip:

Go around **4:00 PM**. You can experience the maze in the twilight, and then see the ice sculptures fully lit up in the dark. It is much more magical at night!

4. Location & Pricing

Snowlandia is located at the foot of the ski jump (Skocznia). You can walk there in 15 minutes from the top of Krupówki street.

  • Season: Usually late December to early March (weather permitting).
  • Tickets: You can buy a "Combo Ticket" that includes the Maze, Igloo, and Toboggan track.

5. Practical Guide: Everything You Need to Know

Ticket Prices (approx.)

  • Adult (Maze + Igloo)60-75 PLN
  • Child 3-12 (Maze + Igloo)40-55 PLN
  • Child under 3Free
  • Combo (+ Toboggan track)80-100 PLN

*Prices vary by season. Always check snowlandia.zakopane.pl for current rates and online discounts.

Opening Hours

  • Season: Late November / December through February/March (weather-dependent)
  • Daily hours: 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM
  • Best time to visit: 3:30-4:00 PM, twilight + lights
  • Duration of visit: Plan 1.5-2 hours total

6. What to Wear Inside the Ice Maze

This is critical, many visitors are underprepared and cut their visit short due to cold. The temperature inside the snow structures is around -5°C to -10°C, even when it is warmer outside.

  • Mandatory: Waterproof winter boots with grip soles (the floors are icy)
  • Essential: A proper winter coat, not just a jacket
  • Recommended: Gloves, hat, and a thin thermal layer under your clothes
  • For modest dressing: Long coat + thick socks + boots works perfectly. The cold actually makes modest dressing an advantage, you will be warmer than most!
  • Camera: Cold fogging is common. Keep your phone/camera inside your coat until ready to photograph to prevent condensation.

7. Combining Snowlandia with Other Activities

Snowlandia is a 1.5-2 hour experience, making it perfect for combining with:

  • Morning: Kasprowy Wierch cable car (book tickets in advance at sklep.pkl.pl). Spend the morning at the summit, then Snowlandia in the afternoon for the lights.
  • Same Day: Walk from Snowlandia across to the Wielka Krokiew ski jump viewing platform, it's right next door and free to view from outside.
  • Full Winter Day: Start at Snowlandia (morning), lunch at a Krupówki halal restaurant, afternoon at the thermal baths, a classic and highly satisfying winter Zakopane day.

Getting There

Snowlandia is a 20-minute walk from the top of Krupówki (follow Droga do Skoków road uphill). Alternatively, take any taxi or the local "busik" to the Wielka Krokiew ski jump, the driver will know it. There is a small parking area on-site for private cars.

Is Snowlandia Right for Your Family?

Snowlandia is suitable for virtually all ages but is best suited to children aged 5 and over, who can fully appreciate the maze, understand the ice sculptures, and safely navigate the toboggan run. Toddlers and infants enjoy the visual spectacle but may find the cold overwhelming after 30-40 minutes, dress them in an extra layer and bring a warm blanket. Elderly visitors or those with mobility issues should be cautious: the icy paths inside the maze can be slippery despite the sand scattered on them. Wear footwear with excellent grip. Overall, Snowlandia is one of the most universally enjoyable activities in Zakopane, a uniquely Polish winter experience that has no equivalent anywhere in the Arab world and will be talked about long after the trip is over. Children especially tend to rate it as the highlight of their entire Zakopane holiday.

Snowlandia for Different Age Groups

Understanding which parts of Snowlandia work best for which ages helps you plan your visit time efficiently. Children aged 5-9 years will be most excited by the maze itself, the scale of the snow walls relative to their small size is magical, and the challenge of finding the exit makes it an adventure they will replay in their minds for years. Teenagers typically enjoy the ice sculpture gallery most, especially the large themed carvings illuminated in colorful lights, which photograph exceptionally well for social media. Adults appreciate the artistry of the carvings and the unusual experience of walking through rooms entirely constructed of ice and snow. Grandparents and elderly visitors can comfortably enjoy the igloo gallery and the entrance area exhibits without navigating the full maze. The toboggan run is a highlight for anyone aged 8 to 80 who is comfortable with a short hill descent. Budget approximately 90 minutes for a full visit, or two hours if you want to explore everything at a relaxed pace without rushing through the sculptures.
