Is Zakopane safe for Muslim families?
Yes, absolutely. Zakopane is extremely safe. The Polish highlanders (Górale) are very hospitable and accustomed to international tourists. You will see many families from the Gulf in the city center, especially in summer. Hijab and Niqab are respected.
Do I need a Visa for Poland?
Poland is part of the Schengen Area. Citizens of UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain, and Qatar typically require a Schengen Visa unless specific visa-waiver programs apply. Always check with the Polish embassy in your country before travel.
Can I use US Dollars or Euros?
The official currency is the Polish Złoty (PLN). While some tourist traps accept Euros at a very bad exchange rate, it is best to pay in PLN using a card (Visa/Mastercard are accepted everywhere) or cash withdrawn from ATMs.
Is there a mosque in Zakopane?
No, the nearest mosque is in Kraków (approx. 2 hours by car). However, you can pray in your hotel room or in quiet outdoor areas. See our Prayer Times page for more info.
Is tap water safe to drink?

Where can I pray in Zakopane?
There is no mosque in Zakopane. The nearest mosque is the Islamic Cultural Centre in Kraków, approximately 100 km north. However, prayer in Zakopane is straightforward in practice. Most hotels and guesthouses accept the request for a quiet room or allow prayer in a room corner. Outdoor locations are plentiful: the meadows near Dolina Białego, the grassy areas beside the Strążyska trail entrance, and the lakeside clearing at Morskie Oko are all used by Muslim visitors. Many halal-friendly restaurants also quietly accommodate a prayer break if you ask. The Qibla direction from Zakopane is approximately 119° (southeast).
What is the best time of year to visit Zakopane as a Muslim family?
July and August are peak season and offer the longest daylight hours, the best hiking conditions, and the widest range of outdoor activities. The downside is crowds and higher prices — accommodation costs roughly 40% more than off-season. Late June and early September offer similar weather with far fewer visitors. Winter (December to February) is excellent for skiing, thermal baths, and the unique highland atmosphere, with daylight prayer windows easier to manage due to shorter days. Ramadan in summer can be challenging given very long fasting hours; winter Ramadan in Zakopane is far more manageable with sunset around 16:00.
Can I find halal meat in Zakopane supermarkets?
Mainstream Polish supermarkets (Biedronka, Lidl, Kaufland) do not stock certified halal meat. Your options are: eat at verified halal restaurants, buy from the dedicated halal grocery near the main street (check our shops guide for the current address), or stock up before arriving. Kraków has several halal butchers and a well-stocked halal section in the Carrefour on Kapelanka street. Many families buy meat in Kraków and keep it in the guesthouse kitchen. Fish, eggs, dairy, and most cheeses (except oscypek which has animal rennet) are widely available and generally safe.
Are the thermal baths appropriate for Muslim women?
This is one of the most common questions we receive. Neither Termy Chochołowskie nor Termy Bania currently offers separate women-only bathing sessions. The pools are mixed gender. Muslim women visitors typically have two approaches: visit during quieter weekday morning hours when the pools are less crowded and full swimwear coverage is more practical, or skip the outdoor pools entirely and use the private spa rooms available at both facilities (bookable separately, for couples or groups). Burkini-style swimwear is accepted — we have not heard of any visitor being turned away for modest swimwear at either venue.
Is it expensive to visit Zakopane?
Zakopane is affordable by Western European standards. A rough daily budget per person: accommodation in a mid-range guesthouse (B&B) 120–200 PLN, three halal meals 80–120 PLN, transport within town 20–40 PLN, one paid activity (cable car, thermal baths) 60–120 PLN. A family of four with a modest guesthouse, eating at halal restaurants, and doing one paid activity per day should budget around 1,200–1,800 PLN per day (approximately €280–420). The Tatra National Park entrance is free; most trail areas are free. The only mandatory purchase is the cable car ticket if you visit Kasprowy Wierch (84 PLN per adult one-way in high season).
