N avigating a mountain town can be tricky with narrow roads and heavy traffic in high season.

Taxis and Apps

  • Uber / Bolt: Both apps operate in Zakopane, but availability can be low in early mornings or late nights.
  • Local Taxis: Reliable but more expensive. Always ask for the price beforehand or ensure the meter is running.
  • Transfers: For airport transfers (Kraków to Zakopane), booking a private van in advance is highly recommended for families.

Public Bus System

Zakopane has a network of small city buses (Komunikacja Miejska) and private minibuses (Busiki).

Key Routes:

  • Line 11: Cyrhla - Krzeptówki (Good for Sanktuarium)
  • Morskie Oko Bus: Departs frequently from the main bus station (Dworzec). Cost is ~15 PLN cash per person.
  • Kuźnice Bus: Necessary to reach the Cable Car station (cars are not allowed). Departs from near the Rondo.

Horse Carriages (Fasiąg)

A traditional way to travel, especially to Morskie Oko. Note that there have been ethical concerns about the horses, so many tourists choose to walk or take the electric bus where available.

Getting to Zakopane from Kraków Airport

Most international visitors fly into Kraków John Paul II Airport (KRK) and travel onward to Zakopane. The distance is approximately 100 km and the journey takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on traffic and route choice. Travellers from the Gulf typically fly via Etihad Airways from Abu Dhabi or connecting flights through Istanbul — halal meals can be pre-ordered on most carriers. Three main options exist for the onward journey, and the right one depends heavily on group size, luggage, and time of year.

Direct private transfer (recommended for families): Private minivans seat 4–8 passengers with luggage and drop you directly at your accommodation. Prices range from 250 PLN to 380 PLN for the vehicle, not per person, making this the most cost-effective option for families of four or more. Book in advance through Krakow Airport Transfer or Zakopane Shuttle; availability drops fast during school holidays and August peak weeks.

PKS FlixBus from Kraków city (budget option): Regular buses depart from Kraków Główny bus station (adjacent to the main train station) roughly every 30–60 minutes and cost 25–40 PLN per person. The journey takes about 2 hours in normal traffic. Note that the bus station in Kraków is separate from the airport, so you will need to reach the city first by the Airport Express train (17 PLN, 18 minutes) or taxi (60–80 PLN). For solo travelers or couples, this remains the cheapest option.

Renting a car: All major rental companies (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt) operate at Kraków Airport. The route follows the S7 expressway south through Nowy Targ. Driving is straightforward except in heavy summer weekends when the last stretch into Zakopane becomes a single-lane bottleneck. Parking in Zakopane centre costs 20–35 PLN per day at the main paid car parks near Krupówki.

Getting Around Zakopane

Zakopane's main street (Krupówki) and the surrounding guesthouses are within comfortable walking distance of each other. Most visitors do not need a car for daily activities once they arrive. The town is compact and largely pedestrian-friendly in the centre.

Walking: Most restaurants, the main bazaar, and access points to the lower trails are 5–20 minutes on foot from Krupówki. Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes matter more here than any form of transport.

Bolt and Uber: Both apps work reliably in Zakopane during summer and winter high seasons. Availability can be limited early in the morning (before 07:00) and very late at night. A typical fare from the centre to Kuźnice cable car station costs 15–20 PLN. Always confirm the destination before accepting, as some drivers unfamiliar with street names may need a Google Maps pin.

Local taxis (Taxi Zakopane): White marked taxis wait outside the bus station and at designated ranks on Krupówki. Agree a price before entering or confirm the meter is running. A standard cross-town fare should not exceed 25–30 PLN. Avoid unlicensed touts near the bus station who charge double.

Electric scooters: Lime and Bolt scooters are available in the town centre from approximately April through October. Useful for covering distances of 1–3 km quickly, especially along the flat sections of the main road. Helmets are strongly recommended on hill sections.

Key Routes for Muslim Visitors

To Morskie Oko: The parking area at Palenica Białczańska is 20 km from Zakopane centre. Drive or take a PKS/Flixbus bus (departs from the main bus station, approximately 15 PLN). From Palenica, an electric bus shuttles visitors to the start of the walking trail (6 PLN). The walk to the lake is 9 km return and takes 2.5–3 hours. Start early — parking and the shuttle fill up by 09:00 on summer weekends.

To Kuźnice (Cable Car base): Private cars cannot drive to Kuźnice. Take the city bus from near the Rondo roundabout (Line K, approximately 4 PLN) or a taxi (15–20 PLN from centre). The cable car ride to Kasprowy Wierch requires pre-booking through pkl.pl.

To Dolina Chochołowska: Take a PKS bus from the main station toward Chochołów or Witów, disembark at Siwa Polana (20 minutes, approximately 6 PLN). The valley entrance is a short walk from the bus stop.

Prayer-Time Transport Planning

When planning day trips, check Dhuhr and Asr times against your intended route. The prayer times page on this site gives daily times for Zakopane. Most outdoor locations (lake shores, valley meadows, mountain clearings) offer clean, quiet spots for prayer without the need to return to your accommodation mid-day. A small travel prayer mat packed in a day bag is the standard solution for most visitors.
