Major Supermarkets

Zakopane has several major chains. Here is what you need to know about each:

Biedronka

The most popular discount supermarket. Good for fresh fruit, vegetables, dairy, and basic staples.
Locations: Aleje 3-go Maja 21, Jagiellońska 18.

Lidl

High quality international products. Often has a "Halal" section during special weeks, but generally, look for vegetarian/vegan symbols.
Location: Józefa Piłsudskiego 20.

Żabka

Small convenience stores found everywhere (green loco). Good for drinks and snacks, but more expensive.

Where to buy Halal Meat?

Fresh halal raw meat is hard to find in regular supermarkets in Zakopane. Your best options are:

  • Asking at Kebab Shops: Some owners (like at Craft Kebab) might sell you raw marinated meat if you ask nicely and perform a bulk order.
  • Online Delivery: Websites like Harbbin deliver halal meat across Poland, but require planning.
  • Vegetarian Alternatives: Biedronka and Lidl have excellent meat substitutes (Tofu, "Vemondo" brand).

Supermarkets in Zakopane — What to Find Where

Zakopane has several major supermarkets within walking distance or a short taxi ride from the main street. Understanding what each chain stocks saves time, especially when shopping for halal-safe ingredients.

Biedronka (multiple locations including ul. Kościuszki and ul. Nowotarska) is the largest Polish discount chain and your best option for everyday groceries. It stocks a good range of dairy, eggs, canned goods, fresh vegetables, bread, and frozen fish. It does not stock certified halal meat. Useful halal-safe purchases: packaged smoked salmon, canned tuna, hummus (check label for no lard — most Biedronka own-brand hummus is plant-based), all fresh produce, eggs, and yoghurts. Open daily 06:00–22:00.

Lidl (ul. Kościuszki area) is similar in range to Biedronka and slightly higher quality on its own-brand items. Check the middle aisle for seasonal imported foods — during summer months, Lidl occasionally stocks items from the Middle East or Turkey as part of its rotating international weeks. Fresh fish counter available in larger Lidl stores. Open Monday to Saturday 07:00–21:00, Sunday 10:00–20:00.

Żabka (convenience stores, several locations on Krupówki and side streets) are small format shops open from 06:00 to 23:00 including Sundays. Useful for late-night purchases of water, snacks, dairy, and ready meals. Selection is limited but reliable for basics. Most Żabka own-brand snacks are pork-free but check labels; crisps with sour cream are safe; any meat snack requires label verification.

Carrefour Express (near the bus station) has a slightly broader range than the discount chains including fresh meats (not halal certified), a wider cheese selection, and more international products. It is the best in-town option for buying a wider variety of spices, pasta, rice, and cooking ingredients if you are self-catering.

Buying Halal Meat in and Around Zakopane

Certified halal meat is the most difficult ingredient to source in Zakopane. The town does not have a dedicated halal butcher. Your practical options:

  • Stock up in Kraków before arriving: The Carrefour on ul. Kapelanka (south of the city centre) has a halal meat section. Several dedicated halal butchers operate in the Krowodrza and Prądnik Biały districts. This is the most reliable option for self-catering visitors.
  • Order at halal restaurants in Zakopane: For meat dishes during your stay, eating at the verified halal restaurants (Craft Kebab, Hossen Kebab, Restauracja Habibi) is the simplest solution.
  • Fish and seafood: Always halal and widely available. Pstrąg (trout) is a local speciality and is served grilled or fried at multiple restaurants including Pstrąg Górski on Krupówki.

Polish Label Reading for Halal Shoppers

Sunday Shopping Note

Poland has restricted Sunday trading. Large supermarkets are closed most Sundays. Żabka convenience stores and petrol station shops remain open all day Sunday. Plan your grocery shopping for Saturday evening if you arrive at a weekend.
