The views that made Zakopane famous.
Zakopane offers some of the most breathtaking views in Poland. From easily accessible spots via funiculars like Gubałówka to the iconic glacial lake of Morskie Oko, there is something for every level of fitness. Our carefully curated list of sightseeing trails focuses on giving you the best panoramas, convenient amenities, and historical insights into the Tatra National Park.
Whether you want a short walk to a majestic waterfall at Dolina Strążyska, or a cable car ride to the peaks of Kasprowy Wierch, you'll find comprehensive guides that highlight Muslim-friendly features, nearby prayer spots, and Halal dining options waiting for you when you return to town.
Morskie Oko is the crown jewel — the largest lake in the Tatras, reached by a flat 9 km paved road from the Palenica Białczańska car park. It is achievable for almost anyone willing to walk, and horse-drawn carriages cover part of the route. Kasprowy Wierch (1,987 m) is the easiest way to stand on a true high-alpine summit, thanks to the cable car from Kuźnice, with 360-degree views spanning Poland and Slovakia. Gubałówka is the family favourite: a quick funicular ride delivers a sweeping panorama of the whole Tatra ridge, plus market stalls and food right at the top.
For greenery and gentler walking, the great valleys deliver. Dolina Kościeliska rewards walkers with limestone gorges and caves along a flat road, while Dolina Chochołowska — the longest valley in the Tatras — turns purple with crocuses each spring and is ideal for cycling. Rusinowa Polana offers perhaps the most rewarding view-to-effort ratio in the region: an easy meadow walk that opens onto a postcard panorama of the High Tatras.
Summer (June to September) brings the warmest weather and full access to the high peaks, but also the biggest crowds — start early, ideally before 9:00, to find parking and beat the queues at Morskie Oko and the cable cars. Autumn paints the valleys in gold and is quieter, while winter transforms Zakopane into a snow-sports hub with Kasprowy Wierch at its centre. Spring is crocus season in the valleys. Whatever the season, mountain weather changes fast: carry a waterproof layer, check the forecast at topr.pl before any higher hike, and descend exposed ridges before early afternoon when summer thunderstorms tend to build.
None of these spots has a mosque on site, so most visitors pray outdoors or back in town. The wide, flat meadows at Rusinowa Polana and the summit area of Kasprowy Wierch offer quiet, clean spaces for prayer with unforgettable backdrops, and the heated station building at Kasprowy is the one place in the high mountains where you can perform wudhu with warm water. Pack a travel prayer mat, use a reliable prayer-times app, and plan halal meals for when you return to Krupówki — our halal food guides cover every verified option in town.
Which sightseeing spots are best for young children? The valleys (Dolina Chochołowska and Kościeliska) are flat and excellent for strollers. The Gubałówka funicular provides mountain views without the hike.
Do I need special gear for these trails? For basic sightseeing in the valleys or using the cable cars, comfortable walking shoes are sufficient. If you plan to hike up to spots like Rusinowa Polana in winter, crampons are highly recommended.
