T here is no view in Zakopane as iconic as the massive, vertical limestone face of **Mt Giewont** seen from the **Strążyska Valley**. This trail is the perfect choice for a quick morning adventure, offering a mix of dense forest, a rushing stream, a historic tea house, and a refreshing waterfall, all within an hour's reach of the city center.
1. The Gentle Forest Path
The trail starts right at the end of Strążyska Street. It is a wide, comfortable path that follows the Strążyski Potok stream. The sound of the water cascading over rocks provides a serene atmosphere that is perfect for contemplation and reflection.
For families with **strollers**, this valley is excellent. The incline is very gradual, and the ground is mostly well-packed gravel. It is a favorite among local parents and senior travelers alike.
2. Polana Strążyska & The Tea House
After about 40 minutes of walking, the forest opens up into a large, stunning meadow (Polana). Directly in front of you, the 600-meter vertical wall of Giewont pierces the sky. In the middle of the meadow sits the **"Herbaciarnia" (Tea House):** a traditional wooden highland building serving hot tea, coffee, and local snacks.
Traveler Insight:
Sit at the wooden tables outside the tea house. It is one of the most peaceful spots in the Tatras to sit for a while, perform a short dhikr, or simply marvel at the Creator's work in the massive peaks above.
3. The Siklawica Waterfall
From the meadow, don't stop! Follow the yellow signs for a further 10-15 minutes. The path gets a bit narrower and rockier here (not suitable for strollers), but it leads you right to the base of the **Siklawica Waterfall**. The water drops 23 meters in two stages, and the air here is very fresh and oxygen-rich.

From the Polana Strążyska meadow, the black trail climbs steeply southeast for approximately 45 minutes to reach Sarnia Skała (Chamois Rock, 1,377m). The summit viewpoint offers a stunning panorama looking down onto Zakopane, with the twin peaks of Giewont towering behind you. The climb is steep, roughly 300 meters of ascent, but the trail is clear and well-maintained. Bring trekking poles if you have them, and allow 3-4 hours total for the round trip including a rest at the top.
Seasonal Highlights
The Strążyska Valley rewards visitors in every season. In spring, the forest floor erupts with wildflowers as snowmelt feeds the stream to its highest levels, the waterfall is at its most impressive in April and May. In summer, the dense beech canopy creates cool, dappled shade, making this a popular refuge from the midday heat even on the hottest July days. Autumn brings the greatest visual drama, golden and amber-coloured beech leaves against the pale limestone of Giewont's face create an excellent colour palette. Winter brings silence, ice formations on the waterfalls, and the special atmosphere of a snow-covered forest; crampons or microspikes are advisable from November onwards.
The Tea House (Herbaciarnia)
The Herbaciarnia on Polana Strążyska is one of the most charming spots in the Zakopane area. Opened in a traditional wooden highland building, it serves hot teas, coffee, local herbal infusions, and simple highland snacks like oscypek (grilled sheep cheese) and kwaśne mleko (sour milk). Everything is prepared without meat, it is a naturally halal-safe menu. Sit at the outdoor wooden tables and spend 20-30 minutes in complete peace with the excellent view of Giewont rising directly above you. There is perhaps no better place in Zakopane for a cup of tea and a moment of quiet gratitude.
Photography Guide
Three unmissable shots in Dolina Strążyska:
- Giewont from the Polana: Stand at the far end of the meadow facing south. The vertical northwest face of Giewont fills the frame. Best in morning light (soft and warm) or with dramatic clouds.
- The Siklawica Waterfall: Use a slow shutter speed (1/10 second or longer) to blur the water into silky streams against the dark rock. A tripod or stabilization is needed; rest the camera on a rock if needed.
- The Stream and Bridges: In autumn especially, the wooden bridges over the golden-lit stream with colourful leaves are extraordinarily picturesque. Walk slowly and look down.
