A Glacial Masterpiece in the High Tatras
The Valley of Five Polish Ponds (Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich) is often described as the most beautiful high-alpine valley in Central Europe.
Accessible only by foot, this glacial sanctuary remains untouched by massive infrastructure, offering a raw and majestic mountain experience. Here, granite peaks over 2,000 meters high reflect in the crystalline waters of the glacial lakes. It is a place of absolute silence, where the only sounds are the wind through the rocks and the distant thunder of the Siklawa waterfall.
The largest, *Wielki Staw*, is the deepest and second largest lake in the entire Tatras (79 meters deep). For the adventurous, the *Zadni Staw* (Rear Pond) is the highest lake in Poland, often remaining frozen until late July. Local legends speak of the "Sleeping Ponds," spirits of the water who protect the valley from those who do not respect the silence of the high peaks.
The hike begins at Palenica Białczańska. After 45 minutes on the paved road to Morskie Oko, you branch right into the **Dolina Roztoki**. This is where the magic begins. You leave the crowds behind and enter a world of dense spruce forests and ancient, moss-covered granite. The Roztoka Valley is a "hanging valley," meaning it sits high above the main Bialka valley floor. As you gain altitude, the trees give way to dwarf mountain pine (*kosodrzewina*), and the air becomes noticeably colder and sharper.
This valley is a prime habitat for the **Tatra Chamois** and the **Eurasian Brown Bear**. It is very common to see overturned rocks where bears have been foraging for insects. Always stay on the trail; the wilderness here is absolute and deeply protected.
As you near the end of the valley, the trail splits. We highly recommend the green trail because it leads you directly to the base of **Wielka Siklawa**. Dropping 70 meters over a sheer granite ledge, it is the largest and most powerful waterfall in Poland. In early summer, the volume of water is deafening. You will climb up the smooth rock slabs right next to the falling water—a breathless experience that brings you right over the lip of the valley into the world of the lakes.
The Valley of Five Ponds has a rich history of exploration. In 1910, the first successful winter ascent to the valley was made by Polish mountaineers. In an era without modern gear, they spent days navigating the deep snow and avalanche-prone slopes of the Roztoka Valley to reach the high-alpine plateau. Their courage established the valley as a world-class winter mountaineering destination. Today, the PTTK Shelter (built in 1948) stands as a monument to this spirit of exploration, sitting precariously at 1,671 meters.
The Valley of Five Ponds offers a level of spiritual serenity that is unmatched in the lower, busier parts of Zakopane.
For photographers, the Five Ponds Valley is a dream. The best shot is from the ridge of **Świstówka Roztocka** looking down into the valley. During the "Golden Hour," the sun hits the surrounding peaks (Kozie Wierchy), casting a perfect, geometric shadow onto the blue surfaces of the lakes. Arrive early to capture the mirror-like reflections on the water before the afternoon mountain winds begin to ripple the surface.
After visiting the lakes, you have two choices for return. You can go back down the Roztoka Valley (fastest), or for 2.5 hours of additional adventure, take the blue trail over **Świstówka** to **Morskie Oko**. This involves a significant climb but offers the most famous panorama in Poland: looking down at the two largest lakes in the Tatras simultaneously. Ensure you have at least 4 hours of daylight left before choosing this high-level traverse.
Avoid the valley on summer weekends at all costs. Instead, come in late September or early October. The crowds are gone, and the surrounding grasses turn a vibrant rusty red, creating a breathtaking contrast with the deep blue water. My absolute favorite spot in the entire Tatras is sitting on the rocky ledge behind the PTTK shelter with a hot tea, watching the clouds roll over the Kozi Wierch ridge.
